I traveled with my sisters and friend to Johannesburg some years ago. It was one of the less exciting trips I’ve been on. I still have no idea why this city was chosen, I came home from school and saw the visa in my passport. Yes, Nigerians need a VISA to go to South Africa.
We flew by Virgin Nigeria from Lagos to O.R Tambo in Johannesburg, which was about 6 hours plus. South Africa is an hour ahead of Nigeria so make that 7hrs. From the moment we arrived, the South Africans on finding out we were Nigerians, never let us hear the last of it. From the airport attendants to the taxi drivers.
We stayed in Sandton, in an apartment hotel which has proven times without number to be the most cost effective way to stay in a foreign land. We were going to be staying over the New Year. 1 Rand is approx 15 Naira
Amazing Places We Went To
Gold Reef City Theme Park – It was really fun, when I saw the Anaconda ride I knew I just had to get on. Riding it was like dying for 20 seconds and waking up to feel such a thrill.
The Lion Park This was the first time, I was seeing wild animals live and direct despite being born and bred in ‘Africa’
Michealangelo We had dinner twice at this restaurant voted the number one in Sandton. It is very posh and the food is good.
My sisters and I decided to go to church to usher in the New Year. We heard that the churches usually don’t do night services on weekdays, but we found Rhema ministries which was quite a distance from where we were staying.
After being caught up in the euphoria of thanking God, praying, singing and dancing, we decided to head back to our place. The cab we had asked to wait for us was nowhere to be found. We had to call another one, and this guy duped us, we paid double the fare and he didn’t even have his meter running.
At first, being Nigerians we said we weren’t paying the fare, then the guy said he would kill us !! WHAT!!! We were so shocked kill us on top 160 rands???? He later said he was a comedian and he was just joking, such a sick joke and on New Years day !!! We ended up paying him.
It was fun, just being with family and in a city I’d never been before. But it’s also the only time I’ve had my property stolen on holiday. Would I go back to Johannesburg? I don’t think so, I didn’t feel much of a connection. If I were to go back to South Africa, I would go to Cape-town.
