I love airplanes, especially from the outside, and I’ve been known to always stop in the street when there’s one going over my head. For a plane-spotter like me, Maho beach is a dream, amongst other things.
Maho Beach is a beach on Sint Maarten. It is famous for the Princess Juliana International Airport adjacent to the beach. Arriving aircraft must touch down as close as possible to the beginning of Runway 10 due to the short runway length of 2,180 metres (7,150 ft), resulting in aircraft on their final approach flying over the beach at minimal altitude
Sint Maarten is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It encompasses the southern half of the Caribbean island of Saint Martin, while the northern half of the island constitutes the French overseas collectivity of Saint-Martin. Its capital is Philipsburg. Its population is 37,000 on 34km2
Even though Sint Maarten is a Dutch territory, you cannot use a Schengen visa to go there. You have to apply for a separate visa to the island using the same documents you would use to apply for a Schengen. Nigerian passport holders who have a UK or US residence e.t.c, are exempt from applying for a visa. See all exemptions here
“Holders of a valid residence permit for the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, the Schengen countries and Ireland do not require a visa. Their residence permits must still be valid upon return from the Dutch Caribbean.”
There are no direct flights from Nigeria or the UK. There are direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol and Paris Charles De Gualle airports (approx 9 hours flight). It costs from £400 RT. There are also direct flights from other Caribbean islands, South America and The States.
The official currency of Dutch St. Maarten is the Netherlands Antilles guilder (ANG) but the US dollar is mostly used on this island.
Things to Do
I am currently still researching on what to do there, but I usually do not travel with a plan. Once I set my sights on a place and I find out how to get there, I decide what to do when I am in town.
But do check back soon enough, I might just have been there and done that.
